Pre-Reboot chapter one.

Pre-Reboot chapter one.

Created Back in 2012 The old version of chapter one was extremely similar to the current chapter one but a lot shorter and did not introduce Terry or Felix.

Overall I think this version of the first chapter is fine, it's kind of fast paced, the art and coloring is inconsistent, the files are small, there are many spelling errors, and the hand drawn font + sometimes fully handwritten lettering is messy. But I do think the art is usually pretty cute, it does show off Isabell's bratty side more in a way that I don't think is too annoying, (sometimes I worry about making things too sweet but I don't want to go too far the other way either.) and there is something to be said for brevity. I am still much happier with the newer version.

Moving into 2013 I started the second chapter, got it all lined but I then did not finish the art because I decided to restart it without the flashback and getting out of the room quicker. Leal also mentions he's a prince in this one, I always had trouble with that if he should be up-front or not and how to integrate it, this time it's pretty awkward, it's kind of glossed over it until he mentions clothes washing and then that's a weird thing for specifically a prince to do for some reason, I guess I meant to imply he should have asked a servant to do it or something, I don't know. I also hate the way I drew Leal here, I kind of miss his more prominent eyelashes but I do not like the way I drew his pointy nose, glad I fixed that in the next version.

Anyway from the current chapter two the biggest difference is Casey's transformation already happened in chapter one and he already notices it, and that Leal is the one to help Casey first. Those are both fine, I really wasn't sure if I should change them when I rebooted but I just decided to do something different since I decided to restart, and personally I like it better the new way.

Jumping ahead to 2015, not sure how the posting worked on the original Smackjeeves but that's the year the files say they start, I restarted chapter two. I was not happy with the old art and I wanted to make the comic in color. (I'm assuming at this point I went back and partially colored chapter one? I probably didn't go back and forth but I don't actually remember.)

It starts the same but this time we make it out of the room and finally meet Terry! The biggest problem I have with this one is that I don't feel like the way the characters were supposed to relate to each other was coming across properly. I still feel like that's one of my biggest struggles but I do think it's a little better now. The art is also still very inconsistent which I don't think is usually a problem but I am confused as to why my process kept changing so fast.

Overall I do like some of the character acting even if I think the writing is weak and I like Terry purposefully swooping in to save the day as her introduction. And I think the decision to keep Leal being a prince a secret worked in this iteration... I actually feel like Leal being a prince works a bit better here as there aren't really any hints in the new version so it becomes less like a secret and more like he just forgot to tell Casey.

And that's all I'll post for now, there is one more full chapter plus a couple more pages of the 4th and some extras, but they have slight spoilers so I will hold onto them until more of the story is revealed.

I will say though we never made it to the palace and that's actually a big contributor to why I restarted, I felt like the characters didn't have enough urgency to get there, sure Casey got sad sometimes but they didn't even mention why they were going to Glassia City to Terry for a couple more pages. There were going to be too many detours and side adventures, granted I also never got to the detours so I could have just edited the drawn chapters a bit and hurried them along to the palace but by the time I was ready to come back to it I felt like it had been too long, the art was too old and I wanted to try some changes to the story.

Although I would be a lot farther I am still glad I restarted because I got to set up a lot more things that I hadn't even thought of that I've gotten to draw and that I'm still excited to get to.
